General-purpose medium for Drosophila

Mix A:

18 g agar

1300 ml H2O

50 ml Nipagin M (10% [w/v] in 95% ethanol)

Mix B:

150 g dextrose

30 g dry yeast

400 ml H2O

170 g maize meal

Combine the components of Mix A and boil. Combine the components of Mix B and blend to a smooth paste. Add Mix B to Mix A and then boil. Pour into vials and bottles, cover these with a cloth, and allow to cool. When cool and dry, seed the surface of the medium with a little dried yeast or live yeast suspension. This medium can be stored at 4ºC in sealed plastic bags for up to 10 days.
