Drosophila fruit juice egg plates
This procedure makes 1 L of solution and yields ~170 juice plates.
MATERIALS
Reagents
30 g agar
10 mL ethanol
300 mL fruit juice concentrate (grape or apple)
700 mL H2O
Equipment
Autoclave
Petri dish lids (plastic, 10 × 35 mm)
METHOD

1. Add the agar to the H2O. Autoclave for 40 min.

2. While autoclaving, spread the tops of the Petri dishes face up on a series of trays.

3. Dissolve the methyl paraben in the ethanol.

4. Add the methyl paraben solution to the juice concentrate.

5. Quickly and thoroughly mix the concentrate into the autoclaved agar solution.

6. Immediately begin dispensing media into dishes.

7. Once the juice plates have cooled and hardened, store them at 4°C.
