Gill’s hematoxylin

MATERIALS

Reagents

Aluminum sulfate (Al2[SO4]3•18H2O)

Prepare an aqueous solution by dissolving 8 g aluminum sulfate in H2O to a final volume of 500 mL.

Ethylene glycol

Glacial acetic acid

Hematoxylin

Sodium iodate (NaIO3)

METHOD

  • 1. Dissolve 2.0 g of hematoxylin in a mixture of ethylene glycol (250 mL) and H2O (750 mL).

  • 2. With continuous stirring (magnetic stirrer) add 2.0 g of hematoxylin, 200 mg of sodium iodate, 17.6 g of aluminum sulfate, and 20 mL of glacial acetic acid.
