Acetic acid (100%)

Carmine powder (e.g., Sigma C1022)

Equipment

Filter paper

Water bath (boiling)

METHOD

  • 1. Pour 55 mL of boiling water plus 45 mL of 100% acetic acid on 0.5 g of carmine powder. Mix.

  • 2. Place in a boiling water bath until the mixture starts to boil again.

  • 3. Mix again. Boil a few more minutes. Allow to cool.

  • 4. Filter.
