The physical origin of the depth discrimination or optical sectioning property of the confocal optical system. A barrier in the form of a pinhole aperture is used to physically prevent (block) light originating from regions in the specimen from passing through the pinhole and, hence, being detected by the photodetector and thus contributing to the final image contrast.
