α-Chloralose

Reagent Amount to add

Maintenance solution
(5 mg/mL)
α-Chloralose 0.2 g 0.1 g
Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) 10 mL 20 mL
  • 1. Combine α-chloralose and PBS in a 50-mL Erlenmeyer flask. Add a stir bar then close with a stopper.

  • 2. Add 40 mL of water to a 100-mL beaker. Place the 50-mL flask in the water with a thermometer.

  • 3. Heat the solution to 80°C, stirring vigorously until the solute is fully dissolved and there is no clouding.

  • 4. Cool to room temperature. Filter the 20-mg/mL solution through a 0.22-μm Millipore filter before administering it.
