A confocal micrograph of a sagittal section through the cerebellum of a GENSAT Rgs8-EGFP adult BAC transgenic mouse (the founder line is CB132). The cell bodies, dendrites, and axons of Purkinje neurons are filled with soluble EGFP, and the signal observed is direct epifluorescence. Examples of over a thousand other such EGFP lines can be viewed on the Gene Expression Nervous System Atlas (GENSAT) website (www.gensat.org). Mice are available via the Mutant Mouse Regional Resource Center (MMRRC; www.mmrrc.org). For an overview of the GENSAT Project and a discussion of how BAC transgenic mice are used for labeling genetically defined cell types, see the article by Nathaniel Heintz and colleagues in this issue (doi: 10.1101/pdb.top073692).
