Cleared and alcian/alizarin double-stained juvenile male veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) skeleton. As Raul Diaz and colleagues explain in this issue, this unique lizard species is a model for studying the early stages of reptilian (nonavian) embryonic development and body plan evolution (doi: 10.1101/pdb.emo087700), and it can be successfully reared in a laboratory environment (doi: 10.1101/pdb.prot087718). It is adapted for an arboreal lifestyle and thus has a divergent skeleton relative to a typical tetrapod. Image from Raul E. Diaz, Jr.
