Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful genetic model for behavioral research, and multiple studies have highlighted the many similarities that exist between flies and mammals in ethanol-induced behavior and the neural and molecular mechanisms that underlie them. In this issue, Nuñez et al. describe the use of the fly Group Activity Monitor (flyGrAM), a platform that provides a high-throughput assessment of group locomotor activity in flies, to study the acute stimulatory and sedative effects of ethanol (doi: 10.1101/pdb.prot108138).
