The naturally short-lived African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) has recently emerged as an exciting genetic model system. In this issue, Rozenberg et al. (doi:10.1101/pdb.prot107742) describe a step-by-step guide for efficient CRISPR–Cas9 genome editing in killifish, for both gene knockout and knock-in. The figure represents the versatility of this experimental model system, artistically represented as a blueprint for a wide range of biological questions. Illustration by Rob Soto and Mayaan Harel.
