We typically make a 2-L stock in a volumetric flask, adding water and commercial solutions of CaCl2 and MgCl2 before other ingredients to avoid calcium precipitation. Adjust the pH to 7.1 with HCl or NaOH solution using a pH meter (Beyenbach and Masia 2002). Store at 4°C for up to 2 wk. Note that this recipe is based on a standard recipe used for Drosophila melanogaster, with the pH adjusted to a published value for Ae. aegypti (Beyenbach and Masia 2002). It is also likely to be compatible with other mosquitoes.
