All-trans Retinal Stock Solution (200 mm)
To prepare a 200 mm stock solution:

1. Dilute 500 mg of all-trans retinal powder (Sigma-Aldrich R2500-500MG) in 8.8 mL of ethanol (ultrapure; e.g., Fisher Scientific BP2818-4).

2. Prepare 1-mL aliquots in microcentrifuge tubes.

3. Store the solution of all-trans retinal at −20°C and away from light before use (the latter is especially important).

The use of such aliquots will speed up the preparation of food for transgenic flies requiring retinal. Aliquots can be kept for several months at −20°C.
