Store heptane and formaldehyde separately at room temperature and then combine in the above proportions (10 mL per vial) right before fixation is carried out. If desired, a working solution of 3.7% formaldehyde (nine parts H2O plus one part 37% formaldehyde) can be prepared ahead of time and stored for at least 1 mo at room temperature.
